Gods and Goddesses

One way to look for a deity who resonates with you is to find one with the attributes that appeal to you or fill a need. At various different times in our lives, we may be drawn to gods who are associated with love or abundance or strength or wisdom. Most gods and goddesses have more than one attribute; ironically, many goddesses of love are also goddesses of war. (Okay, maybe that’s not so far-fetched. Relationships are tough.)

However, just like people, deities are more than just the sum of their parts. They are complicated and multifaceted. It isn’t enough to just say, “Okay, this says Eros is a god of love; I’ll follow him.” Eros is primarily associated with young love, sexual desire, and passion. If you are actually looking for a god to help you with mature, steady, romantic love, you should probably look elsewhere.

But since we want our Book of Shadows to be a handy reference guide to the practice of Witchcraft, to give you a place to start, here is a simple breakdown of some of the attributes you might be looking for.
